Lough Auna Sightings

Lough Auna

Loch Ána

53.51042, -9.98591

One time when the lake was covered with ice a big animal rose up and broke the ice across the lake he was nearly the length of the lake and was something like a horse. Often an animal like a horse but which has a tail about a perch long is seen in the morning on the shore eating. One day a horse was eating near the lake and the animal came up to him.

1967/8

Local man had lost livestock so made a baited trap. Waited by night and heard a loud splash-fired shotgun.

Another man fishing saw something while fishing from a boat- big and black with large round eyes like a dog to the front of its head and a short stump of a nose. It also had short round ears and a short neck.

Two men saw a large 16-17 ft. eel.

1977

A French artist saw a large creature appear on its surface. Bizarrely the creature had two stalk-like eyes.

Tom Joyce and another man saw a 5ft. hump through rifle scope.

A group of people saw a creature from a cottage on the shore. It was 5 ft. long-one person thought they saw a long neck and a head similar to a Labrador dog.

Conclusion

Although Lough Auna is some way from the coast it is quite possible that some form of pinniped, probably a grey seal was repsonsible for several sightings. Lough Auna is too small and shallow to harbour any large creature at around 0.8 by 0.2 miles. Now privately owned land.
